Lucy Swearingen Good ROCK HILL - Lucy Swearingen Good, of Rock Hill, S.C., passed away on Tuesday, June 9, 2015, at Brookdale Senior Living at 1920 Ebenezer Road in Rock Hill, S.C. She was the daughter of William Riley Swearingen and Lucy McIver Watson Swearingen of Edgefield, S.C., where she was born January 12, 1920. Mrs. Good was the widow of Thomas Swann Good Jr. to whom she was married for 50 years. Mrs. Good was preceded in death by her brothers, Milton A. Swearingen, J. Monroe Swearingen and William R. Swearingen; one sister, Anne Swearingen Shackleton Reid; her paternal grandparents, Larkin Griffin Swearingen and Anne Tony Swearingen and her maternal grandparents, Milton Alexander Watson and Ida Anne Cooper Watson. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 12, 2015, at Laurelwood Cemetery in Rock Hill, S.C. The family will receive friends immediately following the graveside service. Mrs. Good and her husband were both active charter members of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Good earned a Bachelor's Degree in 1941 from Furman University and received her Master's Degree in English from Winthrop University. She had a long and notable career as a teacher of English and Speech for 39 years. She taught at Rock Hill High School, York Comprehensive High School, Catawba Academy and York Technical College. She was selected to the 22nd Who's Who Among Teachers in the South and Southwest and was presented the Valley Forge Classroom Teacher's Medal by the Freedom Foundation of Valley Forge for exceptional work in teaching in 1966. She received the Star Teacher Award from the Rock Hill Area Chamber of Commerce, American Legion Outstanding Teacher's Award and Veterans of Foreign Wars trophy for distinctive service as an outstanding teacher. She served as the Class Agent for the Class of 1941 at Furman University for many years. Mrs. Good enjoyed teaching her students and enabling them to develop a life long love of learning. She was loved and cherished by her family members and students. She was an avid reader and enjoyed serving as past president of Over the Teacups Book Club where she often gave book reviews. She was past president of Omega Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma, served on the Board of Trustees of Catawba Academy and was a member of The Catawba Chapter of the D.A. R. She is survived by one sister, Myra S. Bradshaw of Rock Hill and her niece, Anne Shackleton Smith, whom she thought of as her daughter, and her husband, Dickie, of Rock Hill, S.C. She is also survived by her great nephew, Richard Chadwick Smith, whom she thought of as her grandson, his wife, April, and their sons, Samuel Richard Smith and William Chadwick Smith of Rock Hill, S.C. She is also survived by her nephews, Michael W. Swearingen of Greenwood, S.C., J. Monroe Swearingen Jr. and his wife, Charlotte, of Columbia, S.C. and niece, Anna L. Swearingen of Charleston, S.C. Mrs Good was the best. What a great teacher. While she maintained control in the classroom, she also loved those of us that were full of mischief. She engaged us with a twinkle in her eye and invariably motivated us. Thank you Lucy Good. Now rest in peace.
