Lyn,

Thank you for your post. I did not realize US citizens / teachers are being hired without appropriate credentials. Interesting times, no doubt. Good luck with this mission!

Prayers for the residents of Kentucky who have suffered devastating floods this week. Scott and Jeanne Martin in St. Louis may have experienced flooding also. We have other classmates in that area. Pray for their safety and recovery from the horrible storms. K

We'll, guess who came by for a visit?  On 8/17, Roland DeLoach (after flying in from Texas) went by Shelby and picked up Mickey Jennings (Wright) and came to our house.  Roland and I had been close friends since 6th grade at Northside when his Dad became the minister at Northside Baptist.  Lynn & I, after college, spent time with Roland & Nancy (Bradley) when we both lived I Charlotte.  Then jobs took us away and we had not seen each other for 50 years.  Mickie and I were together in school from the first grade through high school.  We had not seen each other for 56 years.  We talked and talked, went to Hobo's for supper and talked some more.  It's amazing when you're around really good old friends that it seems like the last time you talked to them was yesterday!

What a great surprise, Dennis!  I hope you are able to stay connected on a more frequent basis in the future.  The web site is a great place to reunite with old friends. How thoughtful of Roland to go by and pick up Mickey!

I joined a web site in Michigan so I could contact two old friends I used to live next to in Ann Arbor. To my surprise, they were alive and well and we've stayed in touch for over five years. They have been in my memory all these years  (62 years). So glad to finally talk with them again. One lived in Florida until last month and she has since moved to Weaverville, NC.  How great is that! Our childhood friendships are so honest and lasting!

Thanks to Ed Burwell for sending us this photo. He was on Staff Duty for the Commander of the Naval Pacific Headquarters in San Diego from 1983-1985. Ed was officiating in a reenlistment ceremony for the sailor pictured here with Ed. She just sent him the photo! How cool is that and quite a surprise to Ed.

I will add this to the veterans slideshow. Thanks, Ed for sharing and for serving our country.

Becky

Keep Robert and Laura and their family in your thoughts and prayers as he recovers from surgery and possibly undergoes chemo.

September 16, 2022

Caringbridge Post

Updates:

Robert did very well with the surgery.  They were successful in getting a larger sample of tissue to send out for testing.  He was able to get the chest tube out on the day after surgery and he was able to be discharged.

Next steps:

We meet with his SCOA oncologist next week.  We are hoping to start back on chemotherapy as soon as it is safe after the surgery.  We are praying that his platelet levels stay in a good range so that treatment is possible. We are also praying he can tolerate the side effects well (this treatment is still new for him).

In the next 2-4 weeks we will get back the results of the tumor testing and we hope you can pray with us for it to reveal further treatment options.

We appreciate all of your prayers and support. There have been times of worry and fear in all of this ... but our faith keeps us strong and we feel your prayers and kindness.

Keep Robert and Laura and their family in your thoughts and prayers as he recovers from surgery and possibly undergoes chemo.

Robert:  My prayer for you is that God continues to bless you with all His gifts - your faith, peace of mind and spirit, hope for a healthy future, healing, and many miracles yet to come.  In those long boring hours of recuperation, if you haven't already, try counting your blessings. That should keep you busy for hours!  Praying you are up and around soon.

Robert Gantt

Dear RHHS Class of 1966 friends: Many thanks for the messages of prayers, hope and encouragement. One of my daughters recently set up the Caring Bridge site to help keep everyone informed and it has been a big help especially to my wife, Laura, who has done a great but exhausting job keeping different groups up to date while trying to make sure no one gets left out.

A CaringBridge Site was created for me. It‘s a caring social network to help people stay connected with family and friends during a health event. We should have set this account up years earlier.

https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/robertgantt
Site Name: Robertgantt

If you visit the Caring Bridge site, they will let you know when there is an update posted.

This health journey started in March 2018 with a diagnosis of Pancreatic Cancer. I saw Doctors at Levine Cancer Center, Duke and South Carolina Oncology Associates. My cancer was inoperable and my best option for treatment was IV chemotherapy. My first two chemo combinations lasted over two years each before the cancer found a way to work around it’s effects. I've just started my third combination and Doctors tell me it probably won't work as long. The reason for recent visits to Duke was to have cancerous tumors biopsied from my lungs with the hope of finding tissue in the biopsies susceptible to a known drug that has been successful fighting my type of cancer. It's a preemptive move looking for a "next step" treatment. If this effort is not successful then immunotherapy or clinical trials may be the next move.

That's probably more than most of you wanted to know but I can tell from texts and calls that a lot people really didn't understand where I was in this journey.

By the way the 2018 year is not a typo. I have been an exception with 4 1/2 years of treatment
and feeling pretty well most of the time. My Doctors are amazed. I give God all the credit and I thank each one of you for your prayers. I know for sure the God answers prayers. I'm living proof of it.

I have a big Birthday coming up soon and Laura and I just celebrated 53 years of
a wonderful marriage. I have great Doctors and the best caregiver in Laura that you can imagine.

Thanks for your concerns and prayers.

Robert
